Slabovia embraces the declarative theory of statehood, as defined by the 1933 Montevideo Convention which states that an entity becomes a state when it meets certain criteria, independent of whether other states recognize it. These criteria are: a defined territory, a permanent population, a government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states. International legal scholars and diplomats generally agree with the declaratory theory, which posits that statehood is determined by factual criteria, not by recognition from other states.
With rare exception, the Government of Slabovia does not enter into treaties of mutual recognition, aid or trade, with other individual micronations. However, Slabovia does support treaties which establish a common understanding between all micronations, such as The CHICAGO Accord.
Slabovia routinely engages in diplomatic relations and activities with other nations and micronations by way of MicroCon conferences, summits, state visits and joint military exercises and operations. Examples include a strategic alliance with The Aerican Empire and Westarctica in the Micronational Outer Space Task Force (MOST), and participation with the Kingdom of Ruritania in the Micronational Anti-Squirrel Task Force.
Slabovia is also one of the five member nations of the MicroCon Committee (having hosted MicroCon 2019) and has a seat on the board (and is part of the voting body) of the Micronational Hall of Excellence.
